Wide Format Printers vs. Plotters: What's the Difference?
Today, the two terms get used interchangeably. That wasn't always true. Plotter originally referred to a pen-and-arm device that drew technical line art directly onto paper. It is a genuinely different mechanism from a printer.
Modern plotters are inkjet wide-format printers, so today the word mostly signals a use case (CAD drawings, blueprints, technical line work), rather than a different underlying technology. Wide-format printer is the broader category, covering everything from precise technical plotting to full-color graphics and signage, all on rolls of paper wider than a standard printer can handle.
Most wide-format printing today runs on inkjet technology rather than laser, which is what HP's DesignJet and PageWide lines use. They offer better color accuracy, fine-line detail, and a wider range of compatible media.
Utah's Authorized HP DesignJet Dealer
SBR is an authorized HP DesignJet dealer for Utah. HP grants that authorization directly, not through a distributor several steps removed from the manufacturer. We carry HP's full wide-format lineup, from CAD-focused printers built for architecture and engineering firms to full-color graphics machines, and every unit we sell is installed and serviced by our own team, not a call center in another state.

Why Utah Businesses Choose SBR
We looked at a few wide format printer dealers near us in Utah before deciding, and SBR was the only one that actually specialized in this equipment instead of treating it like an afterthought. Their team knew the products inside and out.
Setup and install were handled quickly, and the financing options made it easy to get the plotter we actually needed instead of settling for a cheaper model. Would recommend SBR to any engineering office in Utah looking to upgrade.
We traded in our old plotter toward a new HP DesignJet and the credit made a real difference. After comparing a few options, it was genuinely the best plotter printer choice for what our print shop needed.

Wide Format Printer FAQs
The terms are often used interchangeably today. Historically, a plotter used a pen-and-arm mechanism to draw technical line art, while a wide format printer used ink or toner across a wider range of applications. Modern plotters are inkjet wide format printers, so the word plotter now mostly signals a technical/CAD use case rather than a different technology.
